We are very excited to start the year! Our goal is to get your child excited about coming to school and getting engaged in their learning (and of course, keeping them healthy and safe!). We want to help them become lifelong learners, who persevere when challenged, and become problem solvers. This year will fly by and we will work hard to get your child ready for life in junior high.
In this package, you will find information about your child’s upcoming year. This package looks a little different due to the uncertainties of COVID. Items have been altered because we just don’t know how things are going to play out. Please let us know if you have any questions/concerns. We are partners in helping your child be the best he/she can be.
For special events and field trips, we will ask for volunteers so please make sure you have your Criminal Record and Child Welfare checks completed and filed in the office.
Student’s will need to bring a day planner/agenda to record all daily homework/communication. As an option, school agendas will be available to purchase through the office for $7.00.
All assignments, announcements, and important notes are posted on the HOMEWORK/AGENDA page on our class websites or on Google Calendar. It is your child’s responsibility to check the class websites as part of their daily homework. We also will be checking for parent initials EVERY night in the planner.

We will start the year off by reading Iqbal. The book is based on a true story of a boy who was a child slave in Pakistan and weaved intricate carpets. He was a small boy with a big heart who brought about change in the world around him. The ending is tragic, but Iqbal leaves a legacy behind of hope for the future. He joins a liberation front and helped many other children out of slavery. He became a leader at a very young age. This novel will infuse into many subjects and we will explore what justice really means and how we can too can become leaders for a better tomorrow.
Social Studies
Social is based on the pillars of democracy and becoming contributing citizens. We will learn about the birthplace of democracy in Ancient Athens, the Iroquois Confederacy and how its structure affected our current day democracy, and we will explore our local and provincial government. In the past, we have arranged a field trip to the Alberta Provincial Legislature. It is unclear at this time if this field trip is possible.
Religion
This year, we will be following the new Religion Resource. The units are as follows:
Unit 1: God Calls Us to Know Him
Unit 2: O Come, Divine Messiah
Unit 3: Answering God’s Call to Serve Unit 4: Take Up Your Cross
Unit 5: Gather Us Together
Confirmation
Our religion program makes many references to this sacrament and we will discuss the sacrament and preparation often in class. All sacraments are a family and parish responsibility that Catholic schools support.
Health
At this time we are unsure if the R.C.M.P. are able to come into our classroom for the grade 6 D.A.R.E. program. The D.A.R.E. program normally lasts for ten weeks. A Graduation would normally follow after the class lessons are complete.
Provincial Achievement Tests
The Provincial Achievement exams will take place this year in May and June. They consist of all four core subjects; Language Arts (reading & writing), Math (computation & problem solving) , Social and Science.
The exam days TBA.
Classroom Procedures
Binder System
Each student maintains two binders--- a daily working binder and a storage binder. The working binder contains the unit material in all the subjects that we are currently studying. The storage binder will remain in their lockers. The students can put their old units into it as a way to stay organized and keep their working binder tidy. The storage binder is only for storing completed units and materials that will be needed for review when we prepare for the achievement tests at the end of the year. The students will also need to use the GOOGLE CLASSROOMS and their DRIVES.
Homework
The amount of homework your child receives varies from child to child. Homework is usually finishing up work that was not completed in class.
***Students should be reviewing notes and new material as it is being covered in class and be reading on a regular basis at home. Also, daily math practice for multiplication is highly recommended.
